- establishing a Center of Information and Educational Help for the inhabitants, the youth and the disabled constitutes a basis for the creation of a self-funding idea of independence;

- creating conducive conditions for becoming independent through work and active life under decent conditions which enable the disabled to fulfill their goals will convince the society that age and disability are not equal with incapability of living a normal life,

- organizing joint trips, meetings, parties, concerts, which is not possible in regular places of residence at all due to considerable difficulties bound to transportation and its high costs; this will be a way of fulfilling one of the major assumptions of andragogy, i.e. active inclusion into social life,

- if possible (except for employing assistants), an independent implementation, management and financing of the project is an important step towards relieving public forms of providing care,

- taking into account the fact that the majority of centers and establishments treat the disabled instrumentally, they fulfill the function of designers, executors of this project and administrators of apartments,

- the programme is of renewing nature, which is an outcome of a clause concerning the fact that the apartments are the ownership of the Association “One” and cannot be inherited. For the place of a person resigning from the project of shared housing, a new disabled person wanting to live their life actively and independently is invited;

- we support the residents in all matters and actions, in which we can, taking into consideration the level of our strength, knowledge and abilities,

- we know one another inside out, therefore, living among our friends we are not anonymous, living in separate apartments we are not strangers, we work and play together retaining the right to privacy,

- mutual monitoring enables us to react quickly when necessary (falling off the wheelchair), short absence, not answering the phone is enough,

- working for the benefit of the inhabitants equals activity and presence in the society. Thanks to our own, regular work for the benefit of our neighbours, inhabitants of the district where the project will be fulfilled, and not thanks to actions organized for us, we will avoid isolation and exclusion,

- self-driving project: the participants already have their apartments, take part in the project, however, do not inherit apartments, earn (thanks to their abilities) and are thus able to maintain apartments given (if possible), when they leave, they try to recommend a new active person who is eager to work in a team, to replace them.

- easy contact (people spread within Warsaw are not able to take up any active work or activity due to difficulties with moving and transportation costs),

- ongoing auto-monitoring of the residents and using care only in emergency situations (24-hour assistant) is a way to avoid instrumentality and anonymity, isolation, lack of individualization, disappearance of interpersonal relationships and incapacitation in health care centers or nursing homes as well as loneliness in case of individual care at home, which completely kills the need to be an active part of the community.

 

Alternative costs covered by communes in case of failure of this project

Six people are going to participate in our project (in 5 apartments, a married couple in one of them). On the assumption that a monthly cost of stay in a health care center (we fulfill the qualification requirements for health care center) amounts up to 4.5 thousand PLN a person (an average cost in Warsaw in 2015).
